I Never Really Liked The Smiths
Let me start by saying the Smiths and Morrissey are in regular rotation at my house these days; however, that wasn't always the case.
All of my friends listened to The Smiths, and the drummer in my first band was obsessed with Morrissey but for some reason, it did nothing for me.
I was used to the more immediate dark-dopamine hit of The Cure and Depeche Mode, and The Smiths almost sounded happy, as if that was a bad thing.
The main issue, I didnt listen to the lyrics closely enough.
After I started listening to the words, it all made sense. The upbeat, jangly chords paired with morbid lyrics were part of the plan.
Now here are 3 of my all-time favorite Smiths/Morrissey lines:
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
"I was looking for a job, and then I found a job / And heaven knows, I'm miserable now / In my life, why do I give valuable time to people who don't care if I live or die?"
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out
"If a double-decker bus crashes into us / To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die / And if a 10-ton truck kills the both of us / To die by your side, the pleasure, the privilege is mine."
Everyday is like Sunday
“Every day is like Sunday. Every day is silent and grey.”
